The hardest thing to get used to when you spend any time in Florida is the Cretaceous Era sized bugs! The Palmettos and roaches are enormous, not to mention the banana spiders (as big as your hand, I kid you not!).
Once, my brother and I were playing pool in the garage. We had our backs to the table and heard a thump. The sound a small animal would make jumping off a couch. We turned around and a banana spider landed on the pool table from the ceiling!

Another thing about those banana spiders – their webs are like thin steel cables and always seem to be about face level. There’s also the large brown roach spiders (great to have to take care of the big roaches, but these suckers are also huge themselves). Florida – land of unbelievably large bugs
I grew up in Florida and still have scary dreams about getting caught in those banana spider webs… and those freakin’ palmetto bugs… they are big and ugly and scary as it is… until you see one take off and fly…
Nonetheless… I miss Florida and will be back soon (maybe even sooner if these DC area snowstorms keep up)
Bugs, aside, I miss it too, Brett! One day I will go back…at least for the winters!
That was NO banana spider…it was just me having way too much enjoyment from the game!!!!
Some people in Satellite HS used to eat cockroaches — something about increasing virility, I think.
This was hilarious and original! I felt that way sometimes even about the bugs in Mich growing up. Thankfully in CA they’re few and, best of all, small! I don’t know how you Floridians handle it, but I give ya props!
Banana spiders! BRRRRR! You can HEAR them coming. I kid you not. And there’s some new monster bug that’s iridescent black with yellow stripes. A tad bigger than a palmetto with huge, spiny cricket-like legs. My wife says it’s new to Florida. I think it’s extraterrestrial.
